Automated Consistency with Design System for Platform Migration

Establishing a unified design system to support a platform migration and prepare the digital ecosystem for future AI-driven content and experience generation.

The Problem
Avalara’s website relied on multiple legacy templates and fragmented design patterns, making it difficult to maintain consistency across pages and campaigns. As the organization prepared to migrate to a new Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) platform, the lack of a unified design framework created risk for both experience quality and long-term scalability.

The Objective
Create a centralized design system that would ensure experience consistency across the platform migration while enabling scalable production and preparing the digital platform for AI-assisted content and experience generation.

The Strategy
A structured design system was developed in Figma, defining reusable components, patterns, and layout structures aligned with the new AEM platform. These components were mapped directly to the CMS architecture, allowing designers, developers, and producers to work from a shared system. The approach ensured consistency during migration while creating a structured foundation ready for AI-enabled tooling such as Gradial Studio.

The Outcome
Avalara successfully migrated to the new platform with a consistent, scalable experience framework. The design system reduced duplication, accelerated production workflows, and established a foundation for future AI-assisted experience creation.

Stakeholder Metrics

  • 80% reduction in unique page patterns through reusable design system components

  • 4× faster page assembly through design-system-aligned AEM components
